This is the story of the pioneering days of steamships from the Clyde to Stornoway. The first steamship reached Stornoway in 1825. In 1846 James Matheson, then owner of Lewis, introduced the first regular service with his ship, the Mary Jane. By the mid 1850s a regular twice-weekly service had been established.
Using contemporary newspaper reports, this book tells of the ships and voyages, captains and crews, and emigrations and shipwrecks, illustrating the importance of these ships to the development of the Stornoway and Lewis.
