A Collection of Images Through The Years. Hramns-ey, Rhumsaa, Rams-a, Ramsey: the town has been known by different names. From Viking times, Ramsey Bay has provided a fine natural anchorage, and the small settlement that lay midway along the twelve-mile curve of the bay gradually grew and developed as a port and eventually became the capital of the north. In the 18th century, the town flourished as a smuggling depot. Down the years, it has nurtured the fishing industry, the export of agricultural produce, and shipbuilding. It came into its own in the 1880s as a quality holiday destination and saw unprecedented development.
Because of its geographical location, it is often regarded as a place set apart from the rest of the Island. Those born and bred in Ramsey have a fierce pride and attachment to the place and, no matter how far they travel, it will always be home. In this publication we hope to illuminate what it is that makes Ramsey so unique and inspire such devotion.
