Stena RoRo’s E-Flexer class of ro-pax ferries has rapidly become the benchmark for efficiency, capacity, and adaptability. Designed with modularity in mind, the vessels feature large freight decks, comfortable passenger accommodation, and improved fuel efficiency compared to previous designs. The ‘E’ relates to efficiency and environmental performance, whilst ‘Flexer’ reflects the customisable potential of the concept. The flexible design is deployed across a range of markets, from freight-dominated routes, to passenger-focussed services, as well as a blend of the two.
Designed by Stena RoRo and built by AVIC Weihai Shipyard in China, E-Flexers represent a significant evolution in ro-pax shipbuilding, standardising the core hull and machinery design yet allowing bespoke adaptations tailored to the needs of customers. The design encompasses differing vessel lengths, power configurations - including LNG dual-fuel capability and hybrid-ready systems - and customised bespoke interiors, thereby combining the benefits of reduced construction costs and shortened delivery times, while still offering customer flexibility.
The first E-Flexer, Stena Estrid, entered service in early 2020 for Stena Line on the Irish Sea. Twelve vessels are now in service, with a further three on order; Stena Line and Brittany Ferries each operate five E-Flexers, whilst DFDS Seaways and Marine Atlantic run one each. Corsica Linea and Attica Group have further vessels on order, making the E-Flexer the most successful modern ro-pax platform.
This book reviews the evolution and implementation of the E-Flexer design with a detailed review of each vessel in service and those on order, illustrated by a wide variety of photographs from conception to delivery.
